- Critique key issues in educational development, such as technology, working in the unionized environment, developer as facilitator, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Educational development continues to evolve and has great moral intentions behind it. Despite this, there are still some great challenges that educational development must face. One of the main challenges that educational developers face is lack of formalised career structures. Now this is a very controversial issue that stems from institutional discrepancies. According to Wikipedia (2024), institutional discrepancy can be described as “the treatment of an individual or group of individuals by an institution through unequal consideration of members of subordinate groups” (p.1). Unfortunately, many institutions view educational development as a support service rather than a core academic function. As a result of this notion, educational developers may not be integrated into formal academic structures with clear hierarchies and promotion systems. This organisational positioning limits career advancement opportunities and reduces the overall recognition of the field within academia or so called “formal recognition”. Educational development is sadly often underappreciated in comparison to teaching or research roles. Despite having well-established career structures in most academic institutions. This undervaluation may stem from perceptions that educational developers are not directly involved in teaching or research outputs, and thus their work does not warrant the same career rewards, such as tenure, promotions, or salary increases. The reward of educational developers gaining a formalised career structure would help evaluate and legitimate the status of educational developers within academic institutions. If you acknowledge the importance of educational developers, work institutions can foster a culture of respect and recognition or educational development, and how it aligns closely with core academic functions such as teaching. Defining a career path can enhance job satisfaction and reduce turnover as employees are more likely to stay within the rules when they see opportunities for growth and development. It is unfortunate that educational development is not already seen as an established career. In part, this is how I see the challenges and rewards of educational development in the education system.
Week 11 of EDST 3500 we focused on Scholarships of Teaching and Learning we each choose an article from the CJSOTL (Canadian Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) I chose to focus on an article named “Student-generated Multiple-Choice Questions: A Java and Web-Based Tool for Students to Create Multiple Choice Tests” This article focused on how engaging students in the creation of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) using a Java and web-based tool impacts their learning experience and outcomes. It likely explores whether this approach enhances understanding, critical thinking, and knowledge retention. The article highlights the positive impact of using Makequiz, a tool for students to create high-quality multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Students generally enjoyed using it and found it helpful in critically engaging with course material. By writing their own MCQs, students gained a deeper understanding of the content, identified areas of confusion, and received instant feedback, leading to stronger performance on the final exam. The article likely demonstrates the value of active learning techniques, where students take ownership of their learning by designing questions. It also shows how integrating technology can support innovative teaching practices and foster collaborative learning environments. Not only did my article help myself, but the articles that my peers summarized help me understand more on SoTL. My comments on their post demonstrate my understanding.
