Course Objective 1

  1. Canadian post-secondary education (PSE), Educational Development refers to the field focused on improving teaching and learning practices within colleges and universities. It involves supporting faculty in enhancing their teaching skills, developing innovative curricula, promoting student engagement, and integrating new technologies or instructional strategies. Educational developers work to improve the overall quality of higher education, ensuring that students receive a more effective, inclusive, and enriching learning experience. This can also include fostering institutional change and supporting professional development for educators in Canadian PSE settings.

A resource from the course that helped me understand educational development was chapter 1.2 of “Educational Developers Thinking Allowed” titled “What is Educational Development” by Celia Popovic (2020).This chapter explores the definition and scope of educational development. It examines how educational development aims to improve teaching and learning in higher education through professional development, research, and fostering a culture of effective pedagogy. A key point that Celia brings up in this chapter is that educational development serves to support faculty in enhancing their teaching skills and approaches, ultimately aiming to improve student learning outcomes. In week 1 of EDST 3500  we were asked to be able to define what educational development is. On the right of this slide you can see my simple definition of what Educational Development is.

Again, educational development is the process of improving teaching, learning, and education systems to help students achieve better outcomes. That is as short and simple as I can define it so anyone, of any age, could essentially understand it. In the beginning of this course, week one to be exact, we were assigned a video called “Institute Conversation with Isabeau Iqbal” (2020). In this video, Carolyn Hosler and Isabeau Iqbal discuss the world and work of an educational developer Isabeau Iqbal. They delved into her work as an educational developer. Exploring how teaching and learning strategies can evolve to foster meaningful connections in higher education. Iqbal emphasises the importance of relational practices in teaching. Inspired by her engagement with works like Harriet Schwartz’s, Connected Teaching. This perspective highlights fostering growth through care, presence, and inclusivity, and aims to create environments where both students and educators feel they matter and belong. This video helped me begin to shape my own definition of educational development, as well as gave me further insight to understanding educational development.

Jovan Groen is an Educational Developer with an impressive background of over 10 years devoted to Educational Development at  the University of Ottawa. He has created a video on Youtube called ”Video for the EDC Institute”. Within this video he talks roles that support faculty in improving teaching practices, fostering innovation, and facilitating professional development, the values of  collaboration, inclusivity, and a learner-centered approach to education and finally the responsibilities of designing and delivering training, promoting evidence-based teaching, and bridging gaps between institutional goals and educators’ needs. Groen highlights the significance of adaptability, effective communication, and relationship-building in advancing teaching and learning initiatives
